Tulip tree bark
I washed my clothes with bark, in a sock.

That's not quite correct. I washed a load of towels with 0.2 oz (according to my digital scale) of tulip tree bark, or liriodendron tulipifera if you're feeling spicy.
When the bark is stripped, it gives off a lovely aroma similar to April Fresh Downy. No, I'm not kidding. Absolutely smelled like Downy and while not nearly as soft
as when washed with Downy it wasn't unpleasant. It didn't remove heavy staining from one of my kitchen towels, but it did fade it, if only slightly. That's still better than anything I expected from a literal sock with some bark in it. We'll be running a few more tests to see how it works on jeans, work shirts and the like.
Stay tuned for further bark adventures!
